Hunting Rules

Rolling to Hunt

To hunt, roll the appropriate dice pools at the given level for the type and location of the hunt. Please log the hunt using the format in #hunting-log after rolling.

  • You can take blood equal to the number of your successes on the roll. This may be split between multiple targets. (Such as taking 2 from 2 different people to equal 4.)
  • Hunts do not need to be written out as solo scenes, but we encourage doing so, especially if the hunt was particularly successful.
  • The Storyteller or an Assistant Storyteller will become involved if the roll is botched.

Please inform the Storyteller or an Assistant before rolling if:

  • This is your first hunting roll on the server
  • Your character is a fledgling and has never hunted before
  • If your character is at or below their hunger threshold (7 - self control)
  • If you have already hunted the same evening and would like to roll again.

Backgrounds

Only some backgrounds impact the roll being made:

  • Domain: Reduces the difficulty of the roll by one per dot to a minimum of 3 as long as the character is hunting inside of their domain
  • Herd: Adds one die to all pools per dot as long as they are attempting to feed from their herd specifically
  • Fame: Reduces the difficulty of the roll by one per dot to a minimum of 3 as long as their fans would realistically be within the area they are hunting.

Other Factors

Hunting should still retain some degree of difficulty for characters, which is why we don’t allow any other abilities to be applied to hunting rolls at this time.

Risks

You may take 1-2 Blood Points safely. Taking 3-4 will harm the target, while 5 or more is immediate death. Please inform the Storyteller or an Assistant if you wish to kill your target.

Alternative: Something Always Goes Wrong

If a player really wants his character to get blood, he can volunteer the vampire for a narrated feeding scene. Effectively, the player is choosing to forgo the dice roll for hunting, gaining as many blood points as the Storyteller will allow. In return, however, something in the hunting scene will go wrong, as if the vampire’s player had rolled a botch. The scene should be played out as normal, but until the complication sets up, there’s no need to roll the dice —the fate of the vampire is now set on a particular path. These scenes add a level of tension because they are usually called for by the player: The situation is desperate enough that the blood is necessary, and the player is willing to accept the consequences. It also ties into the undercurrent of nihilism in Vampire — there is no situation that can’t get worse.

A player can ask a Storyteller to run this for them only once a week.
